WLA Strategic Plan

Mission:  The Wisconsin Library Association engages, inspires and advocates for library workers and supporters to improve and promote library services for the people of Wisconsin.

PUBLIC RELATIONS & ADVOCACY

Goal 1: WLA will improve the visibility of and support for Wisconsin libraries.

Objective 1: Increase registration by 5 percent total per year in both State Library Legislative Day and National Library Legislative Day (defined as participation by Wisconsin delegates) over previous registration totals, 2012-2015.

Objective 2:  By the end of 2011, send all federal legislative alerts via ALA’s Capwiz tool and determine the feasibility of using CapWiz for state legislative alerts.

Objective 3:  Achieve full state funding for library programs in the 2011-13 biennial budget, as outlined in the WLA legislative agenda.

Objective 4: Work with the WLA Foundation’s Campaign for Wisconsin Libraries Action Committee to provide public awareness information and materials to support the Campaign.

Objective 5: Strengthen current alliances and explore opportunities for new ones that support the goals of the association.

ENGAGEMENT

Goal 2: WLA will provide diverse opportunities for library workers and supporters to engage in association activities.

Objective 1:
By the end of 2011, increase membership by 2% over 2010 year-end levels (net increase of approximately 40 members).

Objective 2:  In 2011, implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan that enables WLA to communicate and promote its programs and services effectively to target audiences using traditional and social media.

Objective 3: By 2013, create a task force to determine if WLA should create 6-8 regional networks to foster networking, professional development, and planning for WLA members and prospective members.

PROFESSIONAL & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

Goal 3: WLA will be a leader in providing professional and leadership development opportunities for library workers at all career stages.

Objective 1:  Create a comprehensive leadership development and retention plan, including recruitment and orientation of new leaders, ongoing training and mentoring for leadership roles, and leadership knowledge management.

Objective 2: In 2011, appoint a professional development committee to determine the need for additional or retooled WLA professional development offerings and to make such recommendations to the WLA Board by end of 2011.

Objective 3: Establish a career development center to aid library workers in finding employment and opportunities for career advancement.

Objective 4: By 2012, examine ways to enhance WLA’s awards and honors program to increase recognition for a wider variety of member achievements throughout the state.

ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

Goal 4:   The structure of the WLA will support the Mission, Vision, Goals, and activities of the organization.

Objective 1: Simplify the structure to encourage clear lines of communication.

Objective 2: Encourage member’s understanding of where one fits in the organization.

Objective 3: Support succession planning and continuity of leadership using a model similar to the president elect/ president/ past president model.

Objective 4: Develop structure so organizational funds will flow in an understandable and fiscally responsible manner.

Objective 5: Add positions needed to perform WLA activities such as webmaster, professional development, and marketing when possible.

Objective 6: Create new committees on an ad hoc basis that relate to the mission, vision, and goals of the WLA such as marketing and membership.
