In a complex and rapidly changing environment, higher
education must help students to become information literate. Information
literacy enables students to recognize the value of information and use it
to make informed choices in their personal, professional and academic lives.
An information literate student effectively accesses, evaluates, organizes,
synthesizes and applies information from a variety of sources and formats
in a variety of contexts. Information literacy requires an ongoing involvement
in learning and in evaluating information so that life long learning is possible.

The WAAL Information Literacy Committee is pleased to announce the seventh Annual WAAL Information Literacy Award.
This award recognizes a librarian or librarian-led team from any Wisconsin academic institution who has made innovative contributions in recent years to advance information literacy. This can be exemplified by the successful development and implementation of a special project or program, librarian/faculty collaboration that advances IL, or integration of IL into a non-library course &/or campus objectives.
This year the nomination process is slightly different. Those people that have submitted proposals to the 2010 WAAL Conference in Milwaukee have automatically been nominated. You do not need to re-apply.
For this year, we are also accepting independent nominations. There are no restrictions as to the size of the instructional effort, discipline, target audience, or techniques employed. Self nominations, as well as nominations of colleagues, are encouraged. Prior nominees are also encouraged to apply.
The award winner will present his/her winning information literacy contribution at the 2010 WAAL Conference in Milwaukee, April 20-23. The winner(s) will receive free registration for the WAAL conference and its Wednesday luncheon and will be recognized there for his/her achievement. The deadline for submission is December 7, 2009.
Next year, we will have completed our transition to the new nominating procedures and all nominations must be submitted as proposals to the 2011 WAAL Conference Committee in order to be considered. There will not be a separate independent nomination process.
Thanks,
WAAL 2009-2010 Information Literacy Award Committee members:
