Serving Men Better

While most of us have done a reasonably good job of selecting materials that appeal to men and women alike, such as investment information, we can and should do a far better job of selecting materials for primarily or exclusively male interests such as high risk sports, war novels and nonfiction, computer games, outdoor life, home workshop projects, guns, etc. Ms. Block offers advice on how to identify good books and magazines to meet their needs, how to increase men’s awareness of the collections available to them, and how to make them feel welcome in our libraries.

OCLC’s CORC

OCLC’s CORC, Cooperative Online Resources Catalog, is one of the unfortunate acronyms with too many meanings—CORC is web-based cataloging software, and is also a database of records describing Internet resources. Although CORC was originally developed for Internet resource cataloging, new OCLC cataloging products for all types of materials will be a lot like CORC. Learn more about the many meanings of CORC from two experienced CORC’ers.

When the Boomers Retire, Whom Will We Hire?

Susan Campbell Bartoletti, Author

Ms. Bartoletti’s book, Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irish Famine, 1845-1850, is the winner of the 2002 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award, as well as many other honors. An eighth-grade teacher for 18 years, Susan Campbell Bartoletti left teaching to write fulltime. She is the author of the award-winning non-fiction photo essays Growing Up in Coal Country and Kids on Strike! She has also written several novels and picture books.

It’s a Two-Way Street: Serving Students and the Public at Academic and Public Reference Desks

Reference librarians often assist patrons who are outside of their primary clientele. It may be the public using the resources at the local academic library or students using their public library for college research. And how and when do we refer patrons to libraries that would better serve their information needs? This panel presentation will look at these questions from the point of view of both public and private academic libraries and the public library.

Metatagging Web Pages

Planning for Side Effects: Managing the Unintended Consequences of Our Technologies

Many foresighted librarians have been thinking about some of the unfortunate side effects of the Internet. Ms. Block will tell you about strategies librarians have come up with to deal with such unintended consequences as the changes in our users’ information- seeking behavior, the decline of book culture, threats to privacy and intellectual freedom, threats to the preservation and integrity of digital documents, the techno-economic imperative that eats up library budgets, and the continuous retraining required of us by the rapid pace of technological change.

Special Libraries Tours

The tour bus leaves at 2:00 p.m. for a short drive to the world headquarters of Rayovac Corporation, founded in 1906. Here we will meet Betsy Vogel, Director of their Technical Center Library. The tour bus leaves Rayovac at 3:15 and proceeds down to the beautiful new Wisconsin State Law Library, located on Madison’s Capitol Square. Connie Von Der Heide and other WSLL staff will guide us through this new facility. The bus departs WSLL at 4:30 p.m., returning to the conference center at 5:00 p.m. Registration is necessary, sign up on the conference registration form.

and the New McCarthyism

Mathhew Rothschild

Mr. Rothschild has been at The Progressive since 1983, working his way up from associate editor to managing editor to publisher, and finally to editor in 1994. Prior to his work at The Progressive, he was an associate editor and then editor at Multinational Monitor, a magazine founded by Ralph Nader.

From November 1994-May 1999, Rothschild hosted the syndicated radio program "Second Opinion." He currently directs the Progressive Media Project http://www.progressive.org/mediaproj.htm, which distributes opinion pieces to newspapers around the country. He has appeared on "Nightline," C-SPAN, MSNBC, NPR, has been a commentator on Wisconsin Public Television since 1998, and frequently appears on Wisconsin Public Radio's "The Tom Clark Show." 

Note: U.S. Senator Russell Feingold, who was to be the keynote speaker at this year's WLA Conference, will not be able to attend.  He sends his regrets and hopes that he can address the Association at a future conference.
