MLIS Student Perceptions on Field Work Experience

The speakers will present their research study results on the experiences of MLIS students who have participated in fieldwork practices in their graduate coursework. The researchers investigated the role of fieldwork experiences of students in the UW-Milwaukee School of Information Studies and will report on how LIS graduate students perceive the fieldwork experience, whether the fieldwork experience serves as a mentoring experience, and which conditions make for the most successful fieldwork experience to optimize learning.

With the ever-increasing prominence of e-books in library collections and catalogs, it is important that librarians have the tools to make the records meet their own standards of excellence in a timely, efficient manner. This presentation will consist of a live demo of MarcEdit, freeware from Oregon State University that allows users to do complex editing of bulk MARC record files. The demo will showcase UW-Milwaukee’s customizations of some of its e-book record files.

The Seven Million Books Project: Google Floods the Digital Plain

In December 2004, Google and five major research libraries agreed to participate in the Seven Million Books Project: an initiative to digitize millions of titles held in research libraries. The University of Michigan was alone among these libraries in allowing all of its titles to be scanned. Project staff Rebecca Dunkle and Abigail Potter will share their perspectives on this project, its potential for unleashing library resources, and the challenges of this unprecedented partnership.

Think Outside the Book, a book discussion program for middle school students and their parents, encourages families to create a dialogue about democratic principles based on themes found in novels and other works of fiction. Using book discussion questions, activities, and creative exercises, children and parents begin to discuss community building and the rights and responsibilities of active citizenship.

Librarians retiring in 2005 reflect on thoughts about their careers.  Featured speakers are: Peter Hamon (past President of WLA, former Librarian of the Year) who retires this year as Director of the South Central Library System, and Vonna Pitel (COLAND member and WEMA representative on the WLA Board) who retired this year from her position as Head of Cedarburg School District Library Media & High School IMC Director.

We have also invited Senator Russ Feingold to speak at the luncheon.

Down a Country Road: Amish Gift Shop and Amish Community Tour

Departing from and returning to the La Crosse Center

Your tour bus will head for Cashton where you will be welcomed by the Kuderers, a non-Amish family, who live on a small farm in the heart of Wisconsin Amish Country. There you’ll find several gift shops, including the Amish Shop, filled with hand-crafted treasures supplied by 45 Amish families. Back on the bus, you’ll enjoy the narrative of an experienced tour guide as we travel down country roads making stops in the Amish community.
