The College Library at the turn of the (20th) Century
La Crosse Center A2
Pete Gilbert, Director, Seeley G. Mudd Library, Lawrence University
The library: “Arranged with taste, preserved with neatness, and
classified with order.”
The librarian: “Affable, accommodating and possessed of all knowledge.”
The students: “have access to the Library, once a week, either on
Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, subject to the following Regulations.”
Sounds like it could be today – but it’s actually 1890. Harken
back to the turn of an altogether different century.

and Instruction, UW-Madison; Constance Steinkuehler,
Assistant Professor, Curriculum and Instruction, UW-Madison
Dr. Squire and Professor Steinkuehler will describe how players of massive
multiplayer online games practice information literacy skills in a rich,
ever changing social environment. The role of the Internet in the lives
of gamers (and others) as both a tool to locate information and a place
to gain new experiences has also been revealed as part of their research.

The history of librarianship provides many examples of librarian activists
and social change agents. At the same time the argument can be made that
we usually perpetuate the status quo. The panel will offer a brief overview
of the tensions in our literature, historical research, and conversation
among library school students as background for a discussion of our role
today. Join us to share stories, struggles, and hopes.

They will talk about how science supports what we know intuitively: that
besides being pure fun, music links us together and enhances children’s
physical, social, and emotional growth. After “tell” comes
“show:” a hands-on, hand-clapping sing-along. Percussion instruments
provided! One lucky participant will win our specially prepared Emergency

The Water is Wide: Training Catalogers
La Crosse Center A1
Janet Swan Hill, Associate Director for
Technical Services, University of Colorado Libraries, Boulder
Today’s graduate programs in Library and Information Science (LIS)
offer a curriculum that is broader than it is deep, and the waters of
bibliographic control are especially shallow. Most new librarians emerge
from their programs with only the barest of introductions to cataloguing.
This session will include consideration of what a new librarian is likely
to know, factors affecting the need for training and strategies for providing
it, and areas for action within the profession.

subscriptions to selected Wiley and Elsevier journal titles were cancelled,
but access to those journals was still available to UW-Madison patrons,

Writers tell the stories of characters and places they care about, some
from our shared world and some from the writer’s imagination. In

include (such as the hemlock trees) are correct. Join Jacqueline Briggs
