Unit Advisory Council
Membership
Chairs and chairs-elect of all divisions, sections, round tables.
Purpose
To foster communications and collaboration between WLA units in order to achieve greater unity of purpose, promote excellent membership services and benefits, and advise the WLA Board and staff about matters affecting the association, libraries and library staff.
Activities
-
No meetings of the UAC are expected in 2012. We will use the spring conferences, WLA conference and Leadership Conference as venues for communication, or schedule teleconferences if an issue arises that requires the attention of the wider leadership. Please contact Ron McCabe, 2012 WLA President, if you have any questions or concerns.
-
December 2: Leadership Conference, Madison. President-elect reports out from Board meeting held the prior day. Focus on budget, strategic plan for next year. Brainstorm WLA conference programming ideas, spring conference pre-planning ideas, concerns of membership, suggest issues for WLA Board to address. General orientation materials presented in the online leadership manual.
Outcomes
-
Gives units more visibility and utilizes leadership talent in a more global way
-
Diminishes silo effect of current unit structure and communications; i.e., UAC provides a way for all unit leaders to communicate and work together on organizational issues
-
Diminishes need for SPARC every three years, as the group will be doing continual planning and providing information to the WLA board for their planning efforts. Could reassess if the need for even broader participation in planning efforts arises.
-
Members will have a more visible communication route to WLA board and the board gets more regular input from members through the unit leadership.
The WLA Board will be working hard to make sure that the meetings are effective and a good use of members' time. This is a group process, and by working with a larger pool of leadership talent, we are sure to improve upon this idea and find even more effective and creative ways to address WLA's challenges and opportunities.
