Readers Section Business Meeting
May 12, 2005
Desiree is now the director of the Ripon Public Library. Her new phone number is (920) 748-6160.
Minutes from the fall 2004 meeting were approved with one correction - Katherine's last name is Hanson, not Henderson.
We now have 234 members, up from 212 last year. Membership has increased every year.
We have not yet received current budget information from WLA so we weren't able to discuss this, but essentially, we haven't spent anything this year.
WAPL 2005 - program on video advisory was very well attended. WAAL 2005 - Helene Androski did a program on immigrant fiction. WLA 2005 - Notable Books Marathon is a go, but Maureen is looking for one more panelist. Gary isn't able to do it because he has to leave that morning for another conference. The other panelists are James Gollata, Bev DeWeese, and Helene Androski. Maureen was thinking of asking Mary Dunn - although someone suggested Sandy Secrest might be a possibility, too. We will also sponsor a session entitled "From Barbara Cartland to Chick Lit: The Appeal of the Romance Genre". We will be sponsoring a book discussion group again this year. Gary and Maureen will decide on the book by Monday. The Banta Award program is considered one of our programs this year since the Literary Awards Committee now falls under the Readers section. The Readers section business meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 27, 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wisconsin Book Festival - Helene Androski submitted five proposals for book discussions. Maureen thought they had all been accepted. WAPL Spring 2006 - Maureen's been thinking about doing something with readers advisory service on the Web. How are libraries doing readers' advisory on their Web sites? What simple things can a small library do to have readers' advisory service on their Web site (e.g., a link to Webrary)? Bibliographies: No news.
Jamie has information about book kits on our Web page. The Reference and Loan Library also has book kit information on their Web site. Maybe we can link to each other's sites or discuss consolidating information.
Desiree appointed three new members from a pool of about 20 interested people who responded to her list posting. Maureen may also want to check the WLA People Pool when it's time to appoint new members again next year.
Jamie forwarded information to Desiree about setting up a speakers' bureau. If we decide to proceed, we could post the information on our Web site - topics, speakers, how far speakers are willing to travel. Gary thought some speakers may even be willing to do presentations at association conferences in other states. We talked about various ways of recruiting people, and suggested that at some point, WLA might want to take over the speakers' bureau. But initially, we thought we could just post an announcement on the READ listserv to see if we have interest and/or volunteers. Elections - Desiree has ballot information and the membership list. We generated a handful of names of potential candidates. We'll first need to review the bylaws to verify the lengths of terms, then check with incumbents to see if they're interested in returning. To recruit, we should probably go through the membership list and shoulder tap those people we think would be good, and/or send out a general announcement to the membership. We also discussed having the chair of the Literary Awards Committee as part of the READ board. Someone suggested asking Dean Bakopoulos to do a (conference) program sometime - or having a session by the person at Madison PL who is writing a book on nonfiction readers advisory. Gary thought we should promote the Banta winner on our Web page as well as post a list of books with a Wisconsin connection that every public library in Wisconsin should own. We could set up a link to the publishers' Web site for further information about the book and author. We also might want to include the Literary Awards Committee's annual bibliography on our Web page. Meeting adjourned at 5:35.
