Conference Highlights

The 1999 WAAL Conference, Libraries and Higher Education: Partners in the Past and for the Future is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13 through Thursday, April 15 at the Radisson West, Madison Wisconsin. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, and the conference concludes after Thursday's afternoon sessions at 4:45.

The conference opens on Tuesday with a 12:00 o'clock luncheon program featuring Dion Kempthorne, Dean at UW-Richland, who will offer thought-provoking insights regarding the library's role on the campus of the future.

Tuesday evening, after poster sessions and a reception, Jean Feraca, from Wisconsin Public Radio, will present The Two-Chambered Heart, a presentation that explores influences on her development as a poet. The evening will conclude with a Swing & Tango Dance Party, where Malia Ferron, of Malia's School of Dance, will introduce us to the fun and excitement of ballroom and Latin Dancing.

Wednesday's highlights include a luncheon with Maureen Sullivan, ACRL President, who will address steps academic librarians can take to become more effective leaders in the campus community. In the evening, after dinner on the town, an evening reception with music will be held at the Frugal Muse Bookstore.

On Thursday, Virginia Hinshaw, Graduate School Dean at UW-Madison, will present a luncheon program on the explosion in research activities and the key role libraries can play in furthering these activities.

Presentations, panel discussions, workshops, and poster sessions will be held throughout the conference on a variety of topics such as building remote reference services, designing stimulating Library Instruction content, creating accessible web pages, starting fresh with collection development, implementing last-minute Y2K strategies, and much more. Specific program information will be mailed to WLA members soon in the call to conference booklet.
