Car-Pooling Coordination
Sign-up sheets will be available at the conference registration
desk for people who are interested in car pooling to local restaurants
for Dinner on your own Wednesday and Thursday
nights.
(A special note to Milwaukeeans: this is a great opportunity
to show off your favorite restaurant and/or help people from out of town
find their way around our busy metropolis).
There will also be sign-up sheets available for those who
would like to car pool to the Marquette University Raynor Library hard
hat tour on Wednesday, and to the UWM Libraries Reception on Thursday.
Finally, there will be resources on local events, attractions,
etc., and a local librarian (me) available at the registration desk to
answer any questions you may have about Milwaukee, how to get to specific
places, and so on. Please ask!
If you have any questions or concerns before the conference
begins, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Thanks!

Connect in the City:
Librarians, Students and Faculty
What a great theme for our WAAL Conference 2003!
What could be more exciting than to connect with our colleagues from across
Wisconsin to share ideas and talk about new innovations and projects?
Connecting also means we get to know one another better and of course
we get to eat and have fun in the process.
One of our notable
speakers will include ALA Past President John Berry discussing The
Shock of the New: The Future of Libraries and Library & Information
Workers. UW-Madison SLIS Professor Ethelene Whitmire will give us
an overview of her research on what those undergraduates are thinking
about as they try to locate and evaluate information in our libraries.
UW-Milwaukee Associate Professor of Governmental Affairs, Mordecai Lee,
will talk about FDR s Forgotten Struggle to Disseminate Federal
Information, which is particularly timely given the U.S. Patriot
Act. ACRL President Elect Tyrone Cannon will discuss libraries as learning
communities. We will also hear from David Schwartz, from Harry W. Schwartz
Bookstores, and Bill Jackson, Harley-Davidson Motor Company Archivist,
who will give us a rare insider s look into one of the most
unusual archival programs in America.
Conference programs
will talk about connecting with students and faculty via tutorials, digital
projects, virtual reference, web based surveys, and distance education.
We ll explore ways to connect with each other through collaborative
projects, residency programs, in-house staff training, and professional
development opportunities. We are even planning a swap meet combined with
our traditional poster sessions and evening reception, where librarians
can share flyers, handouts, guides or strategies suitable for distribution
(swapping).
Since our theme is
Connect in the City we have several events planned to help
you enjoy the beautiful city of Milwaukee. Examples are a hard-hat tour
of the new Raynor Library on the Marquette University campus, an evening
reception at the UWM Library, and a tour of the American Geographical
Society Library.
Please join us at the
WAAL 2003 conference this year. We look forward to connecting
with you!!

Homework Assignment for WAAL, 2003
This is just a little "heads up" if you are
planning to attend WAAL 2003. On Thursday afternoon, there will be a book
discussion program sponsored by the WLA
Readers Section, this time on historical fiction. The book we'll discuss
is Pat Barker's Regeneration.
It's not necessary to have read the book to come to the program, but, if
you want to, this message is to give you enough time to do so. The highlight
of past programs has been folks' sharing of book recommendations, so be
thinking of good historical fiction you want your colleagues to try. Happy
reading!
