Playing With
a Full Deck? Organizing Web Site Content
Kristin Partlo, Program Assistant, Information Services, Center for Instructional
Materials and Computing (CIMC), UW-Madison
This poster session is designed to exhibit
and share the process of a card-sort user study performed and designed
by the CIMC as user research for the reorganization of its web site. Card-sort
kits, created for each member of the Web-team, included sets
of cards, instructions, examples of items on cards (for example, a printout
of a Webliography for users unfamiliar with that term), and results forms.
The flexible kits allowed various card sorts for different research stages.
This session will include exploration of the kits, explanation of various
uses, and discussion of the CIMC Web site reorganization experiences.
Dare to be Wise @ Your
Library: Public Relations at Viterbos Library
Nancy Steinhoff, Reference & Instruction Librarian, Todd Wehr Memorial
Library, Viterbo University
Like many academic libraries, the Todd Wehr
Memorial Library faces the on-going challenge of promoting our services
as a central part of Viterbo University. To heighten understanding of
our skills, the library began a public relations campaign during the Fall
2002 semester. Initially, our plan is to use simple, inexpensive public
relations strategies to increase the Librarys image. We will display
examples of our strategies and projects, which include: a library newsletter,
new library signage, and collaboration with other departments. Ultimately,
our goal is that with such projects, the librarys presence and usage
will increase.
A Practicum That
Came Alive
Jane Kurtz, UW-Madison SLIS Graduate
Peter Cupery, Information Services Librarian, Center for Instructional
Materials and Computing (CIMC), UW-Madison
Last summer, UW-Madison graduate student Jane
Kurtz in conjunction with UW-Madison CIMC staff, created a web-based tutorial
for the KCDL database (Kraus Curriculum Development Library). In this
practicum that came alive, she created the first KCDL tutorial
on the Web and consulted with KCDL
staff on ways to make the database easier to use and understand. This
poster session will feature the KCDL tutorial, information about the KCDL
database and a discussion of the practicum experience. The KCDL tutorial
is at: cimc.education.wisc.edu/ref/user_guides/kcdl/index.html
Web Page Accessibility
at UW Libraries: Policy Mandate versus Reality
Axel Schmetzke, Librarian/Associate Professor, University Library, UW-Stevens
Point
Responding to the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) mandate for equitable program accessibility,
UW System and most UW campuses have adopted accessible web policies. My
previous studies showed that many UW campus libraries contain major access
barriers. In this poster session, I will present my latest accessibility
data (March 2003) and trace the development over the past five years.
Stop by to check on the trend in your library, to learn how to check your
web site for accessibility, or to see a demonstration of how people with
print disabilities can (or cannot) navigate your librarys web pages.
