Describe the practice:
When beginning a discussion of the meaning of "refereed" or "peer reviewed" journals, I blow a whistle and pretend I'm the peer reviewer (referee) of an article. I cite imaginary "penalties" that may make the reviewer send the article back for revisions. I try to keep it lighthearted and use some arm motions as I call out "penalties."

Comments: This activity takes only a couple minutes. It's a good idea to assess the group's mood as it works best with laid back groups.
