Get Up to Speed in Elkhart Lake!
WAAL Annual Conference

--Mary Rieder, WAAL Conference Planning Committee Co-Chair

Can you believe that the 2004 WAAL Annual Conference is next month already? Have you registered yet? The Conference Planning Committee has been working hard to bring you yet another great learning and networking opportunity.

Up to Speed, WAAL Annual Conference

This year’s conference will be held April 21-23 at the beautiful Osthoff Resort and Conference Center in Elkhart Lake, midway between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan.

As our theme indicates (Up to Speed: Information and Technology Literacy for Lifelong Learning), the main focus of the conference will be on Information Literacy, but never fear, there is something for everyone! The conference will kick off Wednesday morning with a plenary session on Legislative Advocacy by Kathy Pletcher, Associate Provost for Information Services at UW-Green Bay. Kathy will fill us in on the five W’s of advocating for our libraries and librarianship.

Wednesday’s luncheon speaker, Randy Burke Hensley, Head of Public Services at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, promises an interesting and fun-filled session entitled, "I’m Not Going to Learn and You Can’t Make Me: Student Engagement (or the lack thereof), Why Higher Education Cares, and Why Librarians Should Really Care." I have already warned Randy that he should pack both his Hawaiian shirts AND his parka, because Wisconsin weather in April can go either way (and usually does).

Thursday morning will see a two-part workshop given by Dane Ward, Associate Dean for Public Services at Illinois State University on "Building an Exemplary Information Literacy Program: A Journey into the Heart of Teaching and Learning." Dane, a faculty member in the ACRL Institute for Information Literacy Immersion Program, will offer tips on how to build a better info-lit program, and promote it to your colleagues and faculty members.

Thursday’s luncheon speaker, Phyllis Holman Weisbard, Women’s Studies Librarian at UW-Madison, will take us along on her adventure, "From Kolkata to Mumbai: A Librarian on the Road in the New India." Her travels in May of last year, culminated in an international conference on, Empowering Women Through Information and Knowledge. Our congratulations go out to Phyllis, who was recently selected as the 2004 winner of the ACRL Women’s Studies Section Career Achievement Award, which she will be receiving at the annual ALA Conference in Orlando in June!

Be sure to stick around Friday morning for Marquette University’s Dr. Lynn Miner and his two-part workshop, "Library Grants without Grief." Dr. Miner, returning to WAAL after his popular session at the 2000 WAAL Conference, will help you develop your skills in designing successful grant-seeking strategies and gain confidence in your ability to write successful grants.

Other sessions (the full details of which can be found in the Call to Conference online at http://www.wla.lib.wi.us/waal/conferences/2004/WAAL_program.pdf) will cover topics as varied as librarians in fiction, K-20 information literacy collaborations, remote reference services, international documents, ethics, metadata, plagiarism, outreach, diversity, ILLiad, and licensing electronic resources.

Register now at http://www.wla.lib.wi.us/waal/conferences/2004/WAAL_reg.pdf. The deadline for pre-conference registrations is Wednesday, March 31. Hurry those forms in to the WLA Office to save yourself $20 and experience another unforgettable WAAL conference!

The entire Conference Planning Committee, Marlys, Stacey, Ron, Gene, Linda, Anna, Todd, Nerissa, Laurie, and I, hope to see all of you next month at the Osthoff!

The Osthoff Will Provide a Luxurious (and Delicious!) Conference

--Mary Rieder, WAAL Conference Planning Committee Co-Chair

Osthoff Resort, facade photo On the shores of beautiful Elkhart Lake, the Osthoff Resort is one of the Midwest's premier resort destinations. The Osthoff's all-suite accommodations, four seasons of recreation, fine American and continental cuisine, breathtaking scenery, and Old World charm combine with all the services and amenities of a AAA Four Diamond resort hotel.

– from the Osthoff Resort and Conference Center website

The Osthoff is unlike any other WAAL Conference site. Its large one-, two-, and three-bedroom suites, (which can sleep from two to four people), each feature a fully-equipped kitchen, dining area, living room with fireplace, TV/VCR, sleeper sofa, and private balcony. Many of the suites also include whirlpool baths. To help you relax after a long day of conference sessions, enjoy its heated indoor pool, sauna, fitness center, gift shop, arcade, or restaurant--Just Otto’s.

If you feel like taking a walk, the charming village of Elkhart Lake will welcome you with its many antique shops, galleries, taverns, and restaurants--all within a few blocks of the resort. The Director of the Elkhart Lake Public Library, Nancy Van Voorhis, invites you to visit them during your stay in town. If the weather cooperates, (and our hotel contact person has assured me that it will be 75 degrees and sunny the entire week), you can even sit on the beach!

The luncheons at the Osthoff promise to be special treats. Meal choices include French nicoise salad with marinated yellow fin tuna, capellini primavera, southern pecan crusted chicken, balsamic grilled portabella salad, grilled chicken and fettuccini carbonara, and roasted pork medallions. Delicacies to be offered as hors d’oeuvres during the traditional Poster Session Reception on Thursday night include pesto rubbed crustini with sun-dried tomato Montrechet, Asian wonton snow crab rangoon, Italian breaded gourmet ravioli, border quesadillas, Italian stuffed artichokes, Oriental pot stickers with spicy garlic sauce, and beef sate. Makes you hungry just thinking about it, does it not?!

Do not miss this opportunity to stay at one of the state’s most-celebrated resorts--at conference prices!

Some Nuts & Bolts...

--Marlys Brunsting, WAAL Conference Planning Committee Co-Chair

Volunteers Needed!

[Why not volunteer for a few minutes or a few hours?! You will be there at the conference anyway, right? ]

The conference committee needs a few more introducers/room monitors. The job consists of contacting the session's speaker(s) and requesting some general introductory information from them. The introducer/room monitor arrives at the session 10 -15 minutes earlier to assess room conditions, ensures that the speaker(s) have water and finds assistance for any equipment issues. He/she then introduces the speaker(s), distributes any handouts and tallies the number of people who attend the session. If you can help, please contact Mary Rieder at 920-929-2757 or via email at mrieder@uwc.edu.

Volunteers are also needed at the Registration table. As people arrive, this volunteer checks off names from a list of pre-registrants and provides an envelope that includes a name tag, meal tickets, receipt, and conference packet. If you can help, please contact Laurie Petri at 715-389-6512 or via email at lpetri@uwc.edu.

And finally, volunteers are needed in the Internet Room. This volunteer opportunity entails helping people access e-mail and finding one of the Technology coordinators if there are any technical problems. Please contact Anna Lewis at 608-263-8199, or via email at alewis@education.wisc.edu, or Todd Mountjoy at 920-929-7640 or via email at tmountjo@uwc.edu.

A Big Thank-you to Our Sponsors!

The WAAL Conference Planning Committee would like to thank the many sponsors for their generous donations. The conference would not be possible without their support!

Information Literacy Award Recipient to Present at WAAL Conference!

--Eliot Finkelstein, Information Literacy Committee

On Wednesday, April 21, Cristine Prucha, UW-La Crosse Information Literacy Librarian and the recipient of the first annual WAAL Information Literacy Award, will present and discuss her award-winning efforts in problem-based learning and faculty collaboration.

Prucha's skills in collaborating with faculty to create problem-based learning assignments for sections of a freshman year seminar at UW-La Crosse and her work on developing "Recommendations Regarding the Integration of Information Literacy into the General Education Curriculum" for the La Crosse campus have garnered praise from the campus community.

The problem-based learning instruction led students to look at complex issues from a variety of perspectives and sometimes challenged them to support viewpoints that were not necessarily their own. "The programs," writes Petra M. Roter, UW-La Crosse Dean of Student Development and Academic Services, "challenged students and put their newfound research and analysis skills to use." Prucha's information literacy planning earned campus-wide recognition and the opportunity for her to present at the UW-La Crosse Annual Teaching and Learning Conference in 2003.
