WAAL Board Candidates for 2006

--Lisa Weikel, Nominations Committee Chair

Vice Chair/Chair Elect Candidates: Valerie Malzacher and Dennis Unterholzner

Valerie Malzacher is the Library Director at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She has been a member of WLA and WAAL since 1992. Current activities include the WAAL Information Literacy Committee in 2003 and 2004. She is a member of ACRL, and served as a member of the Volunteers Committee for the 2005 ACRL Conference. She is also active with CUWL and the UW-System. She chaired the UW-System Electronic Resource Management Task Force in 2003-04, and is currently chairing the Ex Libris Implementation Advisory Committee. She will serve as Vice-Chair/Chair Elect of CUWL during 2005-07. At UW-River Falls, Valerie has served on both the Faculty Senate (as Secretary and Vice Chair) and the Academic Staff Council. She has been the President of the UW-River Falls Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society for several years.

Dennis Unterholzner is Head of Public Services at the Hedberg Library, Carthage College, having served in several other roles there before assuming his current position. He was a key contributor to the planning of the new facility that opened in January 2002, and his support for the many innovative ideas implemented in that facility were factors in Hedberg Library winning the WLA Library of the Year Award in 2004. An active member in WAAL and WLA, Dennis has served on several committees including COO, WAAL Membership Committee and WLA Conference Planning. In addition, he has presented at numerous conferences, including WLA, WAAL, ACRL and LOEX.

“The students who attend the many institutions of higher education in Wisconsin, and the faculty who teach and carry out research at them, are fortunate to be served by our outstanding Wisconsin academic librarians! Whenever I meet and spend time with my Wisconsin academic library colleagues at conferences and meetings, I am always energized by the talent, enthusiasm, and commitment I see throughout our state. As an organization, WAAL must continue to capture this talent and commitment so that we can work together to improve the resources and services that we provide to our students and faculty. Of course, we have challenges. Adequate funding will always be an issue. The need to help our students and faculty become information literate as our information resources become increasingly sophisticated and the need to find new and better ways to store, organize, and access information will continue to challenge all of us in the years ahead. As WAAL Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect, I will work to increase our membership and encourage all academic librarians to take advantage of the educational and networking opportunities that WAAL provides. Together we will be stronger to meet our exciting challenges.”

“There is no question that WLA and WAAL are important organizations, contributing to the professional development of our fellow librarians, members and non-members alike. But if we are to continue our impressive traditions of providing professional development opportunities, we may need to try some new strategies in concert with the tried and true methods that have brought us to this point. Our attempts at increasing membership have allowed us to maintain our strong numbers over the past decade, but I’m concerned that with the retirement of many of our stalwart colleagues these numbers might begin to slip. Even more importantly, we need our new colleagues to become more active in the profession. We know there are many librarians in our institutions who have much to contribute, and if properly encouraged, they will do so. We must investigate new ways to encourage their participation. Membership and active participation in our state associations are excellent training grounds for the library leaders of the future. We need to make a conscious effort to grow our leaders. Those of us who have been active know this and fully appreciate the role WLA and WAAL have played in our lives.

“We must accelerate our efforts with new ideas. I will pursue this goal, by strengthening the WAAL contact program, examining the WLA and WAAL membership fee structure to see if this can be utilized to encourage new members to join and participate in committee assignments, and conduct research as to the reasons why some of our colleagues refrain from joining their state association.

“The jewels of WAAL’s professional development activities have been the annual conferences and the staff development workshops. The quality of these must be continued at the high level they have been in the past. Difficult as this might be, we must even strive to better them.”

Secretary: Julie Kamikawa and Elizabeth Koch

Julie Kamikawa is the Assistant Director and Head of Technical Services at Mount Mary College. Prior to her current position Julie worked at UW-Milwaukee as a cataloger. Julie has been active in WAAL and WLA, serving as chair of the Technical Services Section and as WAAL’s liaison to the Library Development & Legislation Committee. Julie was also active on committees addressing diversity issues while at UW-Milwaukee.

Elizabeth Koch has been the Circulation Supervisor at the UW-Milwaukee Libraries since 1999. Prior to coming to UW-Milwaukee, Elizabeth worked at UW-Waukesha where she was the Technical Services Supervisor from 1979-1983 and the Circulation Head from 1983-1999. While employed at UWM she began working on her MLIS and graduated this past May with her degree. She has been a member of WLA and WAAL for several years and regularly attends WAAL conferences. She was one of four scholarship recipients at the most recent WAAL Annual Conference in Madison. She also assisted with the implementation of a new coffee shop within the UWM Libraries in 2004.

“Having been a student library worker and a professional librarian in academic libraries for a number of years and in a variety of departments, my dedication to WAAL's significance to librarianship continues to grow. I look forward to cultivating our professional contacts in an effort for all of us to learn from and support one another in this fabulous profession. I am honored to be nominated to further serve our Wisconsin library community in this capacity.”

“It has been a great pleasure to attend the past two WAAL conferences, most recently as a conference scholarship recipient. I have worked in two academic libraries (UW Colleges -Waukesha and UW-Milwaukee) with primary duties as circulation supervisor in both locations. If elected, I would bring the same enthusiasm and dedication to the position of WAAL Secretary as I have directed to many years of library employment and the recent completion of my MLIS degree.  Taking detailed notes and being able to summarize major points were helpful skills in graduate school. Listening and communication skills are essential when one works in Access Services.  When I accepted the position at UW-Milwaukee Libraries, I looked forward to working with a larger and more diverse library and university population.  The position of WAAL Secretary offers the possibility of working more directly with library leaders across the entire state.  I welcome this opportunity to once again extend my education by exploring a new venue of direct and vital service to the Wisconsin academic library community.”

Members of the 2005 WAAL Nominations Committee are: Brian Beecher, Christopher Cox, Karen Jander, and Lisa Weikel.

Historical Records Advisory Board Starts Planning for State's Documents

--Karen Kron and Peter Gottlieb, Wisconsin Historical Society

Wisconsin Historical Society, logo

The Wisconsin Historical Records Advisory Board (WHRAB), a ten-member council appointed by the Governor, has started work on a new plan to improve preservation and access for the state’s historical records. WHRAB’s members include archivists, historians, librarians, and family and community history researchers.

Funded in part with a grant from the federal National Historical Publications and Records Commission, WHRAB’s project began with four surveys. The first was an assessment survey of the WHRAB, which was mailed to current and former Board members as well as former Board staff and others who know WHRAB, seeking their input on how well the Board is performing and where it can improve. The second was a repositories survey, which covered more than 400 historical societies, public libraries, government offices, academic libraries, business archives, museums, genealogy societies, and religious archives in the state of Wisconsin. The third was a key informant survey, which included those individuals with a more global perspective on archival records, current issues and national trends. The last survey was compiled using focus groups with graduate students in archival programs at UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee.

At a June meeting in Milwaukee, representatives of historical records keepers, users, and creators in state government, public and academic libraries, local historical societies, genealogy organizations, and higher education history departments selected four key issues for WHRAB’s planning to focus on. The issues chosen were:

bullet point Issue 1 – Electronic Records - What role should WHRAB play in addressing major preservation challenges posed by the emergence of electronic records?

bullet point Issue 2 – Training/Education - In an era of rapid change, how can WHRAB help records creators and keepers become proficient in core competencies?

bullet point Issue 3 – Gaps in the Documentary Record - What needs to be collected in order to adequately document contemporary Wisconsin history?

bullet point Issue 4 – Funding/Resources - How can WHRAB assist records creators and keepers in retaining existing resources and finding alternative funding sources?

At a second meeting in October in Wisconsin Rapids, the same representatives will develop strategies for addressing these issues. WHRAB will then draw up a plan for its work in coming years and distribute the blueprint statewide in the spring of 2006.

Second Annual MATS Webbies Awards--Nominate a Site!

--WLA Media and Technology Section

Help MATS celebrate excellence in Wisconsin website design and nominate a site for our Webbies Awards. It's fun! It's easy!
And the rules are simple:

bullet point The site must be a Wisconsin library or educational institution website.

bullet point Anyone can nominate a site.

bullet point Sites must be submitted via our online form (http://www.owls.lib.wi.us/mats/webbies/submitform.asp) by October 1, 2005.

The categories are slightly different this year with the removal of the "best site by a Wisconsin library employee not necessarily library-related" and the addition of "most accessible site." We have also broadened the rules a bit to include not only Wisconsin libraries, but also Wisconsin educational institutions.

We hope you'll take the time to nominate a site (or two or three), then we'll see you at the WLA conference in La Crosse in October where we'll announce the winners.

ACRL Chapters Council Report – ALA Chicago

--Nancy McClements, WAAL ACRL Chapter Liaison

This generally staid standing meeting was livened by some interesting debate on the relationship of the state chapters to ACRL national. There was so much discussion that we never even reached the normal “what’s going on in my state” part of the session. Some of the questions arose when a close reading of the ACRL Chapters Council Orientation Manual turned up unfamiliar practices. Did YOU know that WAAL is a state chapter of ACRL, and that all WAAL officers must be ACRL members? It’s true. There are many benefits of that tie between ACRL and chapters. For instance, we have all enjoyed (free) ACRL speakers at our spring conference. Also, each year ACRL gives chapters $1.00 per personal member. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for ACRL to know who qualifies, since ALA records exclude those who opt out of allowing their names to be released to outside sources. Although this was meant to protect members from vendors and spamming, it is hampering ACRL’s ability to collect information on who is a member and who is not. ALA is aware of the issue, but a solution does not appear imminent.

Incoming ACRL President Camilla Alire talked about the organization’s upcoming initiatives:

bullet point Advocacy. ACRL will produce a new program for non-administrators, “The Power of Personal Persuasion,” so that they can advance their libraries' agendas on their campuses.

bullet point Diversity. Creating a sister academic library project in Mexico.

bullet point Awards. Streamlining the current process and creating appropriate criteria and policies.

bullet point Grants. Providing $50,000 for proposals to fulfill ACRL’s strategic plan.

The following Chapter Council officers were elected:

Nora J. Quinlan (Nova Southeastern University) - Vice Chair/Chair Elect

Ann M. Watson ( Denison University) - Secretary
