--Karen Jander, Nominations Committee Chair
I would like to thank the 2009 candidates for running for WAAL Vice Chair/Chair Elect and WAAL Secretary. It has become increasingly difficult to find people to run for WAAL offices despite going to an open nomination process. The Nomination Committee would like to encourage WAAL members to think about running for office and serving on the WAAL Board. We need your commitment and leadership to remain a vital organization.
Jim Buckett is Head of Collections Access and Technical Services at Steenbock Memorial on the UW-Madison campus. Jim recently served as a Co-Chair for the 2006/2007 WAAL Conference Planning Committee. He followed up his conference planning experience by participating in a session called Library Conference Planning 101: Backs to the WAAL at the WLA 2007 conference. He has had several presentations and/or poster sessions at WLA and WAAL over the last several years. Jim has served on numerous library committees and was Co-chair of the ALA RUSA.STARS Cooperative Collection Development Committee in 2006/2007.
Vice Chair/Chair Elect Candidate |
I'm honored to have my name placed in nomination for the position of WAAL Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect in 2009. Most of my library career was spent working at the Wisconsin Historical Society Library after graduating from UW-Madison in 1977. Moving to the General Library System on the Madison campus in the year 2000 coincides with my initial involvement in WAAL and WLA, and has provided me with broader opportunities to meet and interact with my colleagues across the state. Giving back to WAAL what it has provided me in terms of professionalism, collaboration and learning is why I would like to serve in this position. Increasing WAAL membership is one of several objectives I'd like to see accomplished if elected. Surveying the WAAL membership itself to hear what they want from their professional organization is also worth investigating. Can we increase the level of networking, learning and resource sharing outside of our excellent annual conference? What do members see as the advantages (or limitations) to WAAL membership? WAAL is an active community of librarians that provides for a diversity of interests and needs; technology, collection management, information literacy, public services, outreach, liaison and marketing. Facilitating this organization's dynamic existence would be a challenge and a privilege. |

“Thank you for the opportunity to be a candidate for WAAL secretary. I believe the experience I have gained as Secretary of WLA's Support Staff Section will help me be a strong addition to the WAAL leadership team. I have worked in an academic library for over thirteen years, and I am eager to share my time and abilities to continue WAAL's tradition of being a strong advocate for academic library personnel. I have an MLS degree from UW-Milwaukee. My work in a small academic library has given me experience and insight into many facets of librarianship. My work background includes library instruction, cataloging, circulation, reference and serials management. I am especially interested in continuing to enhance the number of support personnel participating in WAAL. I would appreciate your vote.” |
“As an academic librarian with less than five years of professional experience, I welcome the opportunity to serve as WAAL secretary. Membership in WAAL has been very beneficial to my personal and professional growth and I value the collaboration and exchange of ideas WAAL offers through programming and committees. I look forward to encouraging other new academic librarians to utilize all that WAAL offers and opening the door to be more active in a vital professional organization.” |
