WAPL Spring Conference, 1999

"Making a World of Difference" is the theme for this year's
event-filled
spring conference. Due to the large number of quality programs suggested by
co-sponsoring units, we have increased the number of program slots to offer
more choices than ever before. The conference will take place April 29 &
30, 1999 at the Paper Valley Hotel & Conference Center in Appleton.
Registration materials will be mailed to all WLA members. Programs include:
"Librarianship in the New Millennium: Opportunities and Dangers."
Herb White, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Indiana University, and prolific library
author and speaker. Technology is a wonderful servant, but a cruel master.
"Public Library Reference Service in a New Era of Technology."
Herb White.
"Newspaper indexing." Jan Dibble, Ron Larson, Rosemary Jenson .
A public and two special librarians talk about indexing (more than obituaries).
"Using BadgerLink Effectively." Mary Struckmeyer, DLCL's Head
of Reference and Interloan will give an update. Exchange tips about effective search
strategies with other attendees.
"Developing and Facilitating Effective Book Discussions." Jim
Miller, Dena Wortzel, David Brostrom. Using Jim Miller's Images of Rural Life in American
Literature, the panel will offer methods of developing book discussion groups.
"Join a Consortium-Or Not." Terry Dawson, Lee Parker, Jim
Krikelas. Library automation consortium in your future? Already in one? Listen as a
librarian and a trustee discuss their decisions.
"Working Together for Quality Library Service in Wisconsin."
Assistant State Superintendent for Libraries and Community Learning Cal Potter will
discuss the major challenges and opportunities before us.
"WLA Legislative Agenda." Doug Baker, Cal Potter. Review
progress and assess efforts.
"Daughter of the Queen of Sheba." Liz Cohen. Discussion of
Wisconsin author Jacki Lyden's book.
"Plugging the Net." Peg Bredeson, Steve Proces, Clare Kindt,
Ken Hall. Present positive Internet policies to library boards and the community and
prepare for negative incidents.
"Families Can Be Fun: Multigenerational Storytimes." Nancy
Paul, Doris Thomas, Dawn Lux.
"WISCAT Online." Mary Clark, DLCL's WISCAT Coordinator, and
Stef Morrill will give updates on the continuing move from CD-ROM to online.
"Beyond Sex: Other Questionable Information on the Internet."
DLCL Technology Consultant Bob Bocher. Yes, there is more than sex (on the 'Net).
"Music: Frosting on the Storytime Cake." Chuck Schacht. You
don't need to be a prodigy to bring music to storytimes-and everyone has more fun.
"Current Topics In ADA." Chris Zencehncko, DNR
Technology Access Coordinator. How technology can help improve accessibility.
"County Library Planning and Funding After Act 150." DLCL
consultants Mike Cross and Al Zimmerman.
"Planning and Fundraising for Capital Campaigns." Consultants
Anders Dahlgren and Boris Frank. Capital projects proceed smoothly with planning.
"Nonverbal Communication at the Reference Desk."

"Library Services for At-Risk Youth." DLCL consultant Frances
de Usabel.

"Reference Forum." Jan Dibble, moderator. Join other Reference
