Protégé Selection / Mentor Pairing
February 2010 The WeLead Task Force will meet to select protégés. Protégés will be given a one-year WLA membership. A WeLead Task Force member will be assigned to track each protégés progress throughout the program. The WeLead Task Force will pair protégés with current WLA members based on protégé preferences and experience, interest, and WLA organizational need. Protégés and mentors will be notified of their pairings by the end of March.
Orientation
Summer 2010 Protégés, mentors, the WeLead Task Force, and WLA staff will meet at the WLA
Offices for an orientation. In addition to a history of the program, protégés will have the opportunity to meet their mentors and gain insights into the structure
and goals of the Wisconsin Library Association.
1 st year
October 2010 Protégés will be required to attend the WLA annual conference. Their conference registration costs will be covered, and protégés will be given a stipend of $250 to cover travel and lodging costs.
Protégés and mentors will be expected to attend a welcoming event where WLA officers and WeLead Task Force members will be present. At this event, WeLead initiative objectives will be presented. Directly preceding the fall conference, protégés will be required to attend specific programming designed to enhance their leadership, training and development. Protégés will be introduced at the WLA business meeting and will be expected to attend specific receptions. Before leaving the conference, mentors should schedule several follow-up contacts with their protégés.
December 2010 Protégés will be expected to attend the one-day WLA Leadership Conference in Madison to gain an understanding of the leadership structure and issues within WLA.
The WeLead Task Force will make leadership assignment recommendations to the WLA Chair-elect for protégé leadership assignments to begin in January 2011. Protégés will be given priority in joining a committee, unit, section or round table that best meets both the needs of WLA and their own professional interests.
2 nd year
2011 During this year, protégés will again be required to attend the WLA annual conference with paid registration and $250 stipend. At this conference the committee will sponsor a “Meeting with Directors” program about leadership for protégés, mentors, and other interested parties. Informal contact with the protégés and their mentors will also continue. Mentors are encouraged to be available for career and skill development guidance, as well as expanding the protégé’s sense of professional possibilities and networking opportunities.
During this year, protégés will also be required to attend WAPL, WAAL or WEMTA. Their registration for this conference will be paid for, and again a $250 stipend will be available. This is a one-time benefit during the three-year program.

3 rd year
2012 During this year, protégés will again be required to attend the WLA annual conference with paid registration and $250 stipend. Informal contact with the protégés and their mentors will also continue. Committee responsibilities will continue for each of the protégés.
