Twin Cities Bus Tour, October 7, 2011

Join the Youth Services Section of WLA as we tour everal libraries in the Twin Cities area. This tours will have a special focus on early learning activities and environments and teen areas, but the tours will include all areas of the library. These tours will be of interest to children’s services and teen librarians, directors, Friends, and trustees who may be considering a new building project or remodeling project, and library school students. A description and itinerary is listed below.
The cost of the Twin Cities tour will be $25. Lunch will be on your own. Space is limited so register early. Confirmations will be sent.
Traveling by bus is an efficient and cost effective way to see these libraries, rather than visiting them independently. The staff at the libraries will be available for the tours and to answer questions. The bus trips help people avoid the hassles of traffic, parking, and getting around in unfamiliar cities. Visiting with other librarians is not only fun and but others often spot interesting things you might miss on your own. It’s a chance to see 4-5 different libraries in one day.

L.E. Phillips Public Library in Eau Claire, is an optional tour for the Thursday evening before the tour begins. The L.E. Phillips Library did a major renovation in 2010. An optional tour will be offered on Thursday, October 6th in the evening.
After traveling to the Twin Cities, the downtown St. Paul Public Library will be the first stop. The library was renovated in 2002. Both the children’s department and the teen area are located in the lower level of the building. The library has made a major investment in early literacy including parent resources that identify ways to practice early learning skills in various locations, such as at a grocery store. The name of the program is “Read Around St. Paul.”

The Minneapolis Central Library is the second stop. This showcase new building was completed in 2006. The children’s department includes an historical room with books and related character dolls and other toys related to the books. The story time room includes early literacy activities that can be used by parents and day care providers and young children. The teen area hangs high above the atrium and is accessed via a bridge. It includes a teen activity room.
Ridgedale Public Library in Winnetonka is the headquarters for the Hennepin County Library System. The youth area has recently focused on creating early literacy “learning spots” throughout the library. The literacy spots begin in the elevator and continue throughout the library.

The final stop will be the Hopkins Public Library. In 2010 the library partnered with the Minnesota Children’s Museum and used LSTA funding to create a dynamic “Main Street Hopkins” early literacy play area.
